Evaluating the 1931 CIE Color Matching Functions

چکیده
The use of colorimetry within industry has grown extensively in the last few decades. Central to many of today’s instruments is the work of the CIE system, established in 1931. Many have questioned the validity of the assumptions made by Wright (1928-29) and Guild (1931), some suggesting that the 1931 color matching functions are not the best representation of the human visual systems’ cone responses. A computational analysis was performed to evaluate the 1931 color matching functions against other responsivity functions using metameric data. The underlying principle is that an optimal set of responsivity functions will yield minimal color difference errors between pairs of visually matched metamers. The difference of average color differences found in the six chosen sets of responsivity functions were small. The CIE 1931 2° color matching functions, on average, provided the largest color difference, 4.56 ∆Eab. With the best performance coming from the CIE 1964 10° color matching functions, yielding an average color difference of 4.02 ∆Eab. An optimization was then performed on the CIE 1931 color matching functions. The concept was that color differences between metamers can be used to improve predictions of color matching functions. If one is to take all pairs, and perform an optimization that globally minimizes the average color difference, then one can hope to obtain an optimal set of responsivity functions. The optimum solution was to use a weighted combination of each of the different sets of responsivity functions. The optimized set, the ‘Shaw and Fairchild’ responsivity functions, were able to reduce the average color difference down to 3.92 ∆Eab. The final part of the work was to build a computer based simulation of the color differences between the different sets of responsivity functions. This simulation allows a user to load a spectral radiance, or reflectance, data file and display the tristimulus match predicted by each of the seven sets of responsivity functions.

Calculation of number of distinguishable colours by real normal observers
The colour-matching functions of standard observers proposed by the CIE represent the normal colour vision for the worldwide population. But there are deviations in the colourmatching functions for real observers with a normal colour vision, so the observer metamerism index was defined by CIE to evaluate the mismatch between them in colour appearance. In this work, we present an alternative for...

In 1931, the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) recommended a colour specification system. After various additions over the years it now includes a series of colorimetric measures such as the tristimulus values ( XYZ ), chromaticity coordinates, dominant wavelength, and excitation purity for colour specification and colour matching, CIELAB and CIELUV colour spaces for presenting col...

The principles that guided the founders of the United States. John Guild opened the meeting with apologies that the agendum circulated in advance was by then out of CIE 1931 system for colorimetry are examined. The principles are applied to the Wright–Guild experimental dedate. He noted, however, that CIE rules then in effect allowed countries four months after the vote for national conterminat...
متن کاملMean Observer Metamerism and the Selection of Display Primaries
Observer metamerism is an unavoidable fundamental limitation of colorimetry. While standard observers might provide accurate estimates of population-mean color matching functions, they can never predict accurate matches for all individual observers. This limitation is minimized in applications where the spectral difference (or potential for metamerism) is small. This is typically when original ...
متن کاملCalculation of the Optimal Colors of Linear Input Devices
A new method for calculating the optimal colors of any linear input device is proposed. The algorithm searches systematically the two types of optimal colors in the R+G+B planes of the device. In this way, the loci of optimal colors associated to the input device can be plotted in its own chromaticity diagram, but also in CIE (human) color spaces. Thus, we can make a comparison in CIE color spa...
